Intent
The aim of the RHE curriculum is to provide pupils with the knowledge, understanding, attitudes, values and skills they need in order to reach their potential as individuals and within the community. Wallington Primary Academy utilises the Jigsaw RHE curriculum to fulfil the requirements of the DFE statutory Relationships and Health Education.
Pupils are encouraged to take part in a wide range of activities and experiences across and beyond the curriculum, contributing fully to the life of their school and communities. In doing so, they learn to recognise their own worth, work well with others and become increasingly responsible for their own learning.
They reflect on their experiences and understand how they are developing personally and socially, tackling many of the spiritual, moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. They learn to understand and respect our common humanity; diversity and differences so that they can go on to form effective, fulfilling relationships that are an essential part of life and learning.

At our primary school, the Jigsaw RHE curriculum is delivered once a week, providing pupils with structured opportunities to develop their understanding of relationships, health, and emotional wellbeing. Children’s voices are at the heart of this learning, with their thoughts, reflections, and ideas captured and valued through our RHE class floor books. Safeguarding is the golden thread woven through all aspects of our teaching and learning, ensuring that every child feels safe, supported, and empowered. This commitment is further strengthened through our diverse assembly programme, where we explore children’s rights and global citizenship, and through class assemblies, where protected talk time enables pupils to discuss and debate current affairs, building their confidence as thoughtful, informed members of society.
impact
The impact of this curriculum is evident in pupils’ behaviour, attitudes, and interactions. They demonstrate increased emotional literacy, are more confident in expressing their feelings, and show a deeper understanding of diversity and inclusion. Pupil voice collected through floor books highlights thoughtful reflections and mature insights, while regular safeguarding audits and pupil surveys show strong awareness of how to stay safe and seek help. Observations during assemblies and class debates reveal children’s growing confidence in articulating opinions and engaging respectfully with differing viewpoints. Collectively, this evidence shows that our RHE curriculum not only supports personal development but also builds a strong foundation for lifelong wellbeing and active citizenship.
